Expanding Horizons

I think it’s generally good for you, the people around you, and to some extent the world when you educate yourself.  Informed opinions are more likely to be reasoned, rational, and thoughtful.  Feel free to disagree with me, of course.

For a while now, I’ve been wanting to learn more about Buddhism, and I’m finally doing it.  The more I learn about it, the more I discover that there’s a lot that appeals to me about Buddhist philosophy, spirituality, and practice.  Tonight I stopped by our local bookstore and picked up a couple books on Buddhist history, writings, and meditation.

I think you are 100% correct here. I used to wonder if all the time I spend reading about the things that interest me was a bit self indulgent, but reflection on this has brought me to the opinion that intentional learning helps me to become a better person by adding to my understanding of other people and of the world around me and by creating an openness to learning from experiences and people.

Good for you! It is a great philosophy. If you get a chance and haven’t compiled a big “must read” pile yet, I would highly recommend anything by Pema Chodron or Thich Nhat Hahn. Also, if you are Christian by heritage (and they don’t contradict each other as I am sure you are aware) then there is a great and relatively recent book called, “Jesus and Buddha are Brothers.” I can’t remember the author’s name just now. At any rate, good for you! I really enjoy your site and you are on my blog roll. What you are doing is inspirational to me and I am sure there are pleny of other folks who feel the same.
