Bagging a Bag

June 16, 2007 · 4 Comments

“No thanks, I don’t need a bag.”  That’s what I said to the guy who was going to put my perfectly-easy-to-carry shoebox into a big plastic bag.

It’s estimated that Americans use nearly 100 billion non-biodegradable plastic bags every year.  That’s a lot of bags.

Helping Someone Else Commute

June 16, 2007 · 1 Comment

Traveling to and from work is a recurring theme here, but for good reason: It’s a large part of our lives, our time spent each day, energy used, and carbon produced. So in addition to taking the train, driving slower, or a number of other things that will probably be written up here some day, I try to help others in their efforts to do the same.

Today, my wife rode her bike to work for the first time. I helped her get ready, pumping up the tires and helping her plot a route. And then, since I was home a little earlier than usual, I hopped on my bike, rode over to meet her at work, and we rode home together. It’s always fun to get out for a little ride.

I’m proud of her for doing it today. Hopefully it was enjoyable and rewarding enough that she’ll start to do it more and more.
